INTRODUCTION
GLUMETZA 1000MG (90 TABLETS)
Generic Name: metformin
Brand Name: Glumetza
Drug Class: Non-sulfonylureas
Glumetza and its generic metformin is available in strengths of: 500 mg and 1000 mg tablets.
WHY IT'S PRESCRIBED
Metformin is a biguanide antihyperglycemic agent used to control high blood glucose (sugar) levels in adults and kids over 10 years of age with type 2 diabetes. This is to prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems (numb, cold legs or feet), eye problems (including changes or loss of vision), increase in heart attack or stroke, loss of limbs, and sexual dysfunction.
Symptoms of high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) include thirst, increased urination, confusion, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing, and fruity breath odor. This medication is for the treatment of type 2 diabetes only and is not indicated for type 1 diabetes. Diabetes is more common in adults over age 40, and those who are overweight.
Metformin works to reduce high blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetics by increasing the body's response to insulin, a natural substance that controls the amount of sugar in the blood. This is achieved by reducing the amount of blood glucose made by the liver, by increasing the insulin sensitivity of body tissues, and by increasing GDF15 secretion which reduces appetite and caloric intake. Taking metformin in conjunction with making lifestyle changes (such as diet, exercise, quitting smoking) and regularly monitoring their blood glucose levels may improve the health of people with type 2 diabetes and lower future diabetic-related complications.
HOW TO USE
The recommended starting dose of metformin extended release tablets for adults is 1,000 mg once daily, to be taken with food in the evening. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 2,000 mg. Metformin may be used alone or with other medications that reduce blood sugar. To ensure that the medication is working well, monitor your blood glucose on a regular basis as directed by your doctor or diabetes educator.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is important to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is less than 10 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children. Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
Do not take metformin if you:
